When women shop for shoes they are making personal choices about how they wish to be perceived. The women in Joan Jonland's "shoe" series are dressed in feminine attire, but their solid body shape emphasizes their strength and determination to be seen. In the shoe stores of Jonland's childhood, men bring women the shoes they ask for--and bow down before them.

Each leaf of a poplar tree, attached by a slender stem, rustles and shimmers in the slightest breeze. Planted in a row as a windbreak, poplars confuse stronger winds, leaning together to bend the force of a gale. "Poplars are the guardians of our last open spaces," says painter Joan Jonland.
